If you are looking for a quick and affordable drapery solution, look no more! We put together a short guide with product links to get the job done. We won’t go into much detail about style, color, and fabric in this blog since we want to simplify the process for you. If you like updating your decor regularly, pick neutral drapes and decorate around them. Here are a few things you need to remember before ordering your drapes.
The length of the rod: Measure the window’s width or bank of windows. Add 5-10 inches on each side. If your window is 50 inches wide, you would usually need to order a 60” rod. The good news is that the rods we suggest below are all adjustable sizes, so you can adjust the width to your liking.
Figure out the finish of the hardware that you would like to use; black, brass brushed nickel or chrome. We preselected for you our favorite options down below.
Drapery width: Curtain panels come in standard widths and lengths. The width should be at least 1.5 - 3 times the length of the curtain rod. If your window is 50 inches wide, you can order two 50-inch panels per window. If you plan to use them as stationary panels to frame a window and don't intend to shut them, you can round down to 1½ times the width.
Drapery length: To find the length of your curtains for the outside-mount rod, measure the distance from the bottom of the installed drapery rod or rings. Subtract ½”- 1” to get the panel length you need.
They can puddle on the floor in luxurious folds if you are going for a rich and elegant look. In that case, add 1-10" to the height measurement. If your rod is mounted on the wall, you can adjust the length of your drapes, placing the rod higher or lower.
You can pick the required widths and lengths of the panel from our suggestions below.
Drapery rings: If you pick a grommet or pocket curtain panel, you won’t need any additional hardware. If the panel you selected requires a set of rings or you love the look of the rings like us, we recommend ordering them in the same finish as the rod and installing them with drapery hooks. (See the links below).
Tip for the ring installation: Do NOT use the clip on the rings. (Yes, many rings come with clips, but they make your drapes hang too low from the rod and look cheap). Use the drapery hooks, they are easy to install, and you can even slightly pierce the fabric on the back of the drapes if there is no belt on the back. (Link to the hooks is down below). Ring installation will require a little bit more work since you will need to space them evenly and install the hooks first. We promise, though, the final result will be worth your time! The panels will be much easier to drape and slide.
In this article, we picked decorative, mostly stationary drapes. If you are looking to black out the light, check our next blog, where we give you roller shade tips and product options that will perfectly combine with your drapes (coming soon).
Another tip: Lastly before installing your drapes, please steam them thoroughly. You don’t want them to look like a shower curtain. We included a perfect compact steamer suggestion below.
You can also drop them off at the dry cleaners so that they can steam them for you.
